Derwent Coloursoft pencils are extra-soft wax-based colour pencils with strong, bright colours that bring a wonderful sparkle to your work. Their velvety softness encourages layer-upon-layer blending of tones, bringing new tonalities to your work. Here are ten tips for using Coloursoft pencils.
- Try each Coloursoft pencil on a piece of paper you plan to use and keep it for future reference.
- Shade each colour from dark to light.
- Coloursoft is a soft, wax-based pencil, so it’s great for blending. Practise blending the colours together. Change the order of the layers, e.g. red over yellow, yellow over red.
- Next to your mixed colours, write exactly what you did. You may not remember it next time!
- Try mixing brown and indigo to get a soft warm black.
- Use a black pencil to colour the pupil or the darkest parts of your work.
- Use a white pencil as a waxy undercoat for areas like the veins on a leaf.
- Use a blender pencil to soften and smooth layers, and a burnisher pencil to add gloss or a photo-like finish to your drawings.
- Try Coloursoft also on surfaces previously painted with Inktense pencils or watercolours. This will allow you to achieve greater colour depth and more detailed colour transitions.
- Keep in mind that temperature can affect your pencil. A warmer environment can help pencils blend more easily, ideal for filling larger areas.
